About Sinister Tidings

Here you will find a collage of likes and dislikes from RTS’ Spyder Collins. The primary focus is to bring fun and indie flashes of art and not so mainstream artists. There is nothing fancy, revealing, political or otherwise world shaping. Just things, introductions, reminiscing and fun in the world of literature, art and music, to which I hope you enjoy and find some pleasure in.

On the writer's iPod – 3 Pill Morning

Rock muse will find 3 Pill Morning (FB) to their liking. Seasoned musicians with a distinctive voice that sets 3 Pill Morning (MS) in a very solid position. Their tour schedule puts them in a winning position, as well. With several years of professional level touring, fronting for such acts as Shinedown, HU and 12 Stone provides an eclectic mix and fan base they have been exposed to and unquestionably conquered.

My muse finds the mood of the rock to be not to metal nor at the poppy or peppy rock sound but somewhere comfortably in between. For my muse the music of 3 Pill Morning (web) offers a get away from the norm. Granted, 3 Pill Morning is not fronted by my normal desire for a female fronted band but it was hard to pass up the inspiration and flowing words that come from the musical offerings of 3 Pill Morning.

The playlist:

  1. Rain
  2. Skin
  3. Nothings Real
  4. Loser
  5. Want That For You
  6. So Good To Leave
  7. Take Control
  8. Revolution
  9. Daddy's Little Girl
  10. Drive By Lies

My muse rolls with tracks 1, 2, 4, 8 and 10. Something a little off the ordinary for this blog – but a for sure winner, check it out.

Moorehead Manner - David McMullen-Sullivan

Moorehead Manner follows three High School kids as they make their way from Baseball practice. Emily, her baseball-playing brother Adam and his teammate and best pal (who Emily has a secret crush on) Jimmy leave practice and head for home in Wallace, Louisiana. As they do the pass by Moorehead Manner and you guessed it – they enter. Jimmy is tossing his prized “world series” baseball up in the air when Emily asked if he ever hit the ball. From there, within several descriptive Kindle pages and too much information, Jimmy smacks his prized possession through the window of the manor.

Naturally, one wonders of this is his prized possession with ties to Mickey Mantle, what in the world is he doing striking the ball with his bat? Further, I suppose in rural parts of the country baseball players in High School whether Junior Varsity or not bring their own bats and prized baseballs to practice. In addition, the quizzical responses to the door being unlocked to the manor – all that aside, the three make their way into the manor. Let the mayhem ensue.

The creep factor and spookiness of the manor take over. The descriptive voice of McMullen-Sullivan is spot on. His writing drips with atmosphere and follows a steady pace. My pet peeve that aside is too much telling of the story versus allowing his descriptive voice to manage, not enough of atmosphere. The story in itself is definitely meant for the younger set, this is not adult horror. It is a simple tale with some basic questions related to the how and why that leave the reader dry.

Recommend for light reading or young horror fans.

The writer’s muse and the art affect

I find that there are many things that stimulate my muse, for me it is primarily music. Music is something that has been covered widely within the dark crevices of this blog. There is another form of art that from time to time sparks my muse. That of the visual arts, primarily illustration, ink and painting - provide great motivation.

From time to time my muse will dabble here about such art, whether a single illustration or a body of work.  One such site is that of Ms. Alexandria Noël and her site “Alexandria Noël Painter • Illustrator • Designer.” I stumbled upon her art via Chamber of Echoes as I was doing some research for my musically inspired muse. Seems Ms. Noël was responsible for the site. The site, might I add, is expertly designed, laid out and masterfully presented.

From there I was able to investigate a bit further and discovered her site – and I was thrilled. The illustration and paintings displayed are exceptional and her Plague Doctor awakened my muse in a unique and specific manner. Sometimes unexpected things get our creativity to blossom – and we can thank the work of other artist for such direction, as I am certain our words inspire at the end of their pen or fingers against a musical instrument.

I highly recommend a visit to Ms. Noël’s site for a spot of inspiration or an eyeful of art that is certain to please and perhaps take you places you never conjured before.

Spyder's ridiculously short movie review: The Wolverine

Wasn’t blown away and not sure how the purest will handle it – but overall, worth a see. Also, stay during the credits – it’s Marvel after all, not DC.

The Accursed

The Accursed
By Sevvie

Garrett sat at the edge of his couch, its cushion stretched from the frame sagging under his weight.  He buried his eyes in the palm of his hands, “Damn it,” he mumbled to himself.
He looked up from his palms.  The walls that enclosed him were dingy; ash covered reminders at best.  Most of the once dawn-tinted carpet was covered in a thin layer of colorless cinder.
The couch and him, his life hanging feebly by hallow heartbeats, was all that remained of his world.  Now he sat alone in the empty confines of what has become his prison.  Lonely, starving for company, praying for salvation.
He is one of the forgotten.
He sobbed to himself as he has for several days.  His tears rolling down his tired, swollen face.  Laments falling on deaf ears, on ears that were no longer there to listen.
Garrett sat alone, tired, and scared.  It was the dawning of the new millennium, the real millennium. It was a new millennium and the apocalypse didn’t arrive like so many predicted.
Garrett had forsaken God, put him off.  He thought about it.  He worried, “What if he does exist and the end of the world comes?” but he worried not nearly enough.
All through his days, he tried to convince himself that he wasn’t such a bad person.  He tried to make it to church, but only passed through her doors once or twice.
He ignored all the jabbering about the true End of Days.  He ignored them all.
Now he lives, for the moment, with that regret.
Garrett lowered his head again, rubbing his hands through his hair he cursed, “God damn you, how could you do this to me?”
     He stood.
Garrett paced across the same stretch of carpet he has paced near ceaselessly, from the couch to the window.  It was the only portion of the carpet that remained the bright dawn-tinted color that had delighted his small apartment.
The color was Tawny’s pride.  She fell in love with it the moment they entered the apartment, during the leasing agents showing.
Garrett smiled for a moment; the thought of her warmed a small piece of his blackened heart.  Of course, God took her away.  He remembered when they came for her, the Angels.
Tawny didn’t want to leave him, “I want to stay with you Garrett, I love you.”  She said, as the Angels cradled her in their ivory wings.
He watched Heaven open up for her and millions of others.  They all rode in a bassinet of downy wings cradled warmly in the open arms of Heaven.
“They’ll be back for you Garrett.  I’ll be waiting.”  He recalled her words as she vanished in the blinding frosty light.
They never came back.  Those Angels never returned.  New Angels did though.  As the sounds of trumpets blared, echoing through the vast sky like thunder, the Angels poured the sour blood of sin over the soil of the earth.
Garrett hid in his apartment as the earth shook and erupted.  He hid, waiting for Tawny to retrieve him in her beautiful Angel wings.
     He still waited.  Alone.
Garrett scoffed at the memory of the Angels.
But he really yearned for their return.  He really yearned for God’s forgiveness.
Although, God is forgiving, there are limits to even what he will indulge.  Garrett didn’t feel remorse, didn’t call on God to forgive his pathetic soul.  He never opened his heart to the grace of God, now he reaps what he has brought on himself.
Even now he shames himself and spites God.
Damnation is his, as he has embraced it.
Memories of Tawny faded as he returned to the window he has paced to, how many times?
     It mattered none.
Garrett reached for the curtain; he ripped it away angrily.
The amber world invaded his apartment.  The acrid air penetrated the walls and window, singing his nostrils.
He looked out from his fourth floor window.  He saw the same sorrowful scene, for as far as his weary eyes would take him.
The soil bled molten blood; it was everywhere leaving destruction in its wake.  The ten million, no hundred million fingers of Lucifer flicked out over the land.  Serpent like flames devouring everything.
The uneven earth dropped into an unfathomable abyss, then to towering creation that reached for Heaven.  The amber tinted everything, the sky, and the man made structures that crumbled beneath the opening lap of Hell.
What remained of the earth, the true earth, stained as well.  And the demons that marched the souls of the infernal, their bodies roasted in the amber that engulfed all sight.
Garrett looked down at the row of the damned marching single file to giant cauldrons that boiled with Lucifer’s blood.
The screams, the cries, the hands reaching for God filled his ears, as the definite pain wet his eyes.  He watched from his fourth floor window as he has since Tawny’s departure.
He watched the demons as they poked and impaled the damned.  Breaking down the flesh until nothing remained but the stripped souls of the forgotten.  He watched the demons torment them with longing and hope, where there was none.
     How cruel it was, awakening.
Soon they would come for him.  Soon the demons would march him into a cauldron and rip his flesh from his bones.  Soon his soul would rest in his never yielding Hell.
     Soon.
There was no rush.  He was all ready in the mitts of hell, in time he would know their rancor.
     Soon.
Until then he would pace the floor from his couch to the window, stopping only to relive his regret as the accursed.

Graveyard Shifts - Laura Del

Pat Wyatt is a freelancer but really, she is so much more. Graveyard Shifts: A Pat Wyatt Novel is a traditional story about werewolves with a central character that drives the tale, makes it rich with personality, and give a shit. Not one to fall in love with the traditional romance that involves hairy creatures or the pointy teeth undead, but Del delivers so much more with a great character.

Pat Wyatt can evolve into one of those characters that people love and will follow throughout a series. She is real, strong yet susceptible – she is human and for many writers that is a hard reality to achieve with their own characters. Besides Pat, the storyline and other characters (mainly Michael and Samuel) are well drawn out and delivered. The plot moves along nicely and is firmly written.

Overall, Graveyard Shifts is a great read with great potential as a series providing Del stays true to her characters. There isn’t much to say negatively about the story – it is what it is, which is a traditional tale, no real twists or unforeseen potholes, it is a well-written fast-paced story that is certain to please the avid reader.

Spyder's ridiculously short movie review: The Conjuring

If you haven't seen The Conjuring yet, GO SEE IT! Nicely crafted tale and for added fun, it is based on a true story.
